A content management system (CMS) is a software which enables users to create, modify digital content, publish and store digital
content. They are typically used for web Content Management (WCM) and enterprise
content management( ECM). |
It has two components
A content management application (CMA) which is a
graphical user interface that enables users to design, create, modify and
remove content from a website without need for coding knowledge.
A content delivery application (CDA) which provides
back-end services which support management and delivery of content once it is created
by a user.
There are two types of CMS installation,
On premises installation which where the CMS can be
installed on the server and is usually considered by businesses which requires
flexibility in there set-up. Some of the CMS that can be installed this way are
Wordpress.org, Drupal and Joomla.
Cloud based CMS is hosted on the vendor environment
hence there maybe limitations on modification done by the client. Some of the notables
CMS installed this way include Wordpress.com, Web flow, Wix and Square Space.

Intuitive indexing, search and retrieval which allows easy access to data through
search functions which allows users to search by attributes using publication
dates, key words or author.
Revision features allow content to be updates and
edited after initial publication and also track changes made to files by
individuals.
